Erosion Prediction in Compressors

Short Discription

Particle entrainment in aero-engines is unavoidable and stable operation or efficiency can be compromised by impurities. The project aims to improve the understanding of the physical flow behaviour of particle-laden flows with the goal of reducing wear due to impact and erosion in modern compressors. The two-phase flow investigation is carried both experimentally and numerically, respectively with Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) and Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD).

Aim/Objective

  •  Validation of available numerical models with PIV experiments
  • Numerically evaluate particle flow and most-likely impact positions for different operation parameters
  • Develop erosion model for reliable compressor design
