Members of the Chair of Spacecraft Systems (Prof. Alessandro Golkar, Lara Schuberth, and Minas Cholevas) co-authored a report by the European Space Policy Institute (ESPI) on the economic viability of Space-Based Data Centres (SBDCs). The study presents a cost model benchmarking two 1-Gigawatt SBDC architectures against terrestrial data centres, identifying key economic barriers and pathways toward feasibility. As AI-driven demand for computational infrastructure grows globally, this work positions Europe at the forefront of the strategic debate on next-generation space infrastructure.
