Following a successful Unitag event in 2025, our research group and Theresa Pfaffinger from the Chair of Engineering Geodesy return to organize our hands-on event for students again in 2026. At the event, we presented to local high school students an overview of our research on monitoring the natural environment using 3D laser scans, and Theresa gave a presentation on the Chair's geodetic research both in the laboratory and out in the field.
Afterwards, the students participated in an interactive, hands-on session where they learned the basics behind using a terrestrial laser scanner and a total station. The students started the session tracking reflector positions in the laboratory using the total station. Then, the students were able to set up our Riegl VZ-2000i laser scanner to monitor of themselves continuously moving around the laboratory in 3D throughout the session. With their laser scanned measurements, the students' setup allowed them to process a 4D analysis of their movements. We were impressed by the high school students' curiosity and their skills in utilizing advanced research instruments!
