January 04, 2023: Best paper award at the HICSS-56 2023 conference for Mengyi Wei

A doctoral candidate at our chair of Cartography and Visual Analytics, Mengyi Wei, has won the Best Paper Award in the Knowledge Innovation and Entrepreneurial Systems track out of 678 papers (https://hicss.hawaii.edu/best-papers/) at the 56th Edition of the Hawaii International Conference on Systems Sciences (HICSS-56). This is a full paper co-working with Zhixuan Zhou, from the School of Information Sciences at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. They presented their work entitled: “AI Ethics Issues in Real World: Evidence from AI Incident Database”.

In this paper, they identified 13 application areas that often see ethical issues of AI, with intelligent service robots, language/vision models, and autonomous driving taking the lead. Ethical issues appear in 8 different forms, from inappropriate use and racial discrimination. They further present top AI risks in each application area. For instance, physical safety and bad performance are top risks in autonomous driving; racial discrimination and gender discrimination are prevalent in both language/vision models and recommendations. By picturing the landscape of real-world AI ethics incidents, and inspecting AI risks associated with each application area, they aim to provide a perspective for guideline makers to formulate more operable guidelines and regulatory frameworks.

HICSS 56 was held in Maui, Hawaii, on January 3-6, 2023. It has been known worldwide as one of the longest-standing scientific communities in the information systems and technology fields.
