The 3DCityDB Webclient developed at the Chair of Geoinformatics won the first price in the 'Best Students Contribution' of the 'Web3D city modeling competition' (http://web3d2015.web3d.org/competition.html) under the annual ACM SIGGRAPH Web3D Conference. From all nine submitted contributions (by companies and students) the 3DCityDB Webclient made it to place no. 3 in the overall ranking (just after the two commercial products of the companies GeoPlex and ESRI). The 'Web3D city modeling competition' was carried out in cooperation with the Open Geospatial Consortium. It involved the development of an Open Source and standards based solution for the best web browser-based 3D rendering of a city. The criteria of judging was based on
- Creativity in addressing a use case
- Loading performance
- Interactive performance
- Diversity of data rendered
- Interoperability and openness of the solution
The development team comprised of two PhD candidates from the Chair, M.Sc. Zhihang Yao and M.Sc. Kanishk Chaturvedi under the supervision of Prof. Thomas H. Kolbe. Both candidates received the annual award of the joint '3D City Modeling Commission' of the German Society for Photogrammetry, Remote Sensing, and Geoinformation (DGPF) and the German Society for Cartography (DGfK) (http://www.3d-stadtmodelle.org) with a financial support to attend and present the work at the 20th International Web3D 2015 Conference on Web3D Technology in Heraklion, Crete, Greece 18-21 June 2015 (http://web3d2015.web3d.org/ ).
