With effect from the 1st of June 2016, Prof. Volker Gümmer, “Chief of CFD Methods and Aerothermal Technology” and “Associate Fellow for Compression Systems” from Rolls-Royce Germany, was appointed as professor of the Institute of Turbomachinery and Flight Propulsion.

Volker Gümmer studied mechanical engineering with a major in aerospace technologies at the TU Braunschweig from 1984-1991. Since 1991 Volker Gümmer had a leading part in numerous engine development programs for the international aerospace and introduced decisive innovations to the product, especially in the programs V2500 Select, BR725 und TP400. During this time in 1999, he furthermore obtained the doctoral degree at the TU Munich. Since 2000 he invented and developed innovative solutions in the area of turbomachinery, which resulted in a new generation of efficient propulsion systems. In 2014 he was awarded with the “Sir-Henry-Roye Innovations Award” as well as the “Trusted-to-Deliver-Excellence Award” by Rolls-Royce for his pioneering developments.

The research focus at the Institute of Turbomachinery and Flight Propulsion lies on aerodynamic optimisation of compressors and turbines, on technology development for future propulsion systems, on further development of construction concepts for gas turbine components and systems as well as the utilisation of recuperator concepts in small and large aircraft engines.
