During a research stay of three months at the Innovative Composite Center (ICC) in Kanazawa, Japan, our colleague Anna Julia Imbsweiler had the chance to work with the research group of Professor Kiyoshi Uzawa. During the research stay our colleague and Dr Takehiro Shirai inspected Sheet Molding Compound (SMC) plates with a new X-Ray Phase Imaging Device, developed in a joint effort of ICC and Shimadzu. With the machine, it is possible to see the through-thickness prevalent fiber orientation. The SMC plates were produced with varying initial charge configurations. Therefore, the flow patterns were different. The goal of the investigation was to identify the influence of the flow pattern on the final fiber orientation.
The collaboration between ICC and LCC shall be deepened over the next years with new joint research and exchanges of doctoral candidates.
