Geodesign

Description

Geodesign is "a design and planning method which tightly couples the creation of a design proposal with impact simulations informed by geographic context" (Flaxman 2010).

Geodesign rises many research questions in the field of Geoinformatics. The Chair of Geoinformatics addresses the following research topics which contribute to the idea of Geodesign:

  • With our background and experience in geospatial semantic modeling, we believe that formally described semantic models will significantly support the geodesign process. In the geodesign context we develop semantic models for:
    1. Describing the geographic context of a planned object: In this field, we work on extending existing semantic models, namely CityGML, in order to support the requirements of Geodesign [more...]. We create a new semantic model for representing the agricultural landscape [more...] and created a Geospatial Web Context Document for exchanging information on the geographic context in a cooperative planning environment [more...].
    2. Modeling planning actions as transactions on geographic features [more...].
    3. Modeling key performance indicators: In order to estimate the impact of changes of some planned actions on the environment, an evaluation of the assumed situation has to be done requiring a proper set of indicators [more...].
  • We investigate interoperability between design tools from the CAE/CAAD world for creating design proposals and GIS for performing impact analyses. Within the project 3D Tracks, our approach is to represent impact analyses by web-based geoprocessing workflows. These workflows can be triggered by the design tools which supports the design process by allowing for rapid iterations of manipulating the design proposal and assessing the design proposal within its geographic context.
